NASIMCO is launching its Annual Ali Asghar Water Appeal this Muharram, honoring the memory of Hazrat Ali Asghar (AS) by providing much-needed access to clean water in arid regions of East Africa. This campaign seeks to construct water wells and implement solar-powered water systems in communities that suffer from water scarcity and drought conditions.
Over the past five years, NASIMCO has provided tens of thousands of beneficiaries with clean drinking water through the generous support of our donors.

East Africa has been grappling with severe water scarcity issues:
Water Stress and Displacement: According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), half of the world population, 4 billion people, live with severe water scarcity for at least one month of the year. About half a billion face water scarcity year-round. Approximately 4.2 billion lack sanitation, 2.2 billion people lack safe drinking water, and 700 million people could be displaced due to scarcity of water by 2030, 250 million in Africa alone. Lack of Access to Safe Drinking Water: The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that around 60% of the population in sub-Saharan Africa, which includes East Africa, does not have access to safe drinking water. (Source: WHO)
Limited Access to Improved Water Sources: The Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (JMP) by UNICEF and WHO stated that in East Africa, only about 54% of the population had access to improved water sources. (Source: JMP)
Waterborne Diseases: Water scarcity and lack of access to clean water contribute to the prevalence of waterborne diseases. Approximately 3.5 million people die each year due to inadequate water supply, sanitation and hygiene. (Source: UN)
Impact on Women and Children: The burden of water scarcity often falls disproportionately on women and children, who spend a significant amount of time collecting water from distant sources. This affects their education and overall well-being. Women and girls collectively spend 200 million hours fetching water every single day. (Source: UNICEF)
